Default Profiles and Copying indicators to other currencies charts

Hi Eugene,

Until now, I have not yet understand what is the use of profiles (we can save spesific chart as a spesific profiles, but i don't know the advantages of doing that), could you explain?

And second question is, if I already hv some indicators on one chart (for example EURUSD), how can I copy those indicators, without having to re-draw and re enter the settings on another chart (for example GBPUSD)

Thank you
Andy_r

Hi Andy,

Profiles are entire sets of charts. When you open your MT4, the charts you see loaded, with all their indicators, colors, settings, etc. - are in the current profile.

You can create new profiles with different sets of charts too.

To use profiles, it is important to keep things in the right order:

1. First, save a new profile and give it a name. All of the charts you see in MT4 will go in that profile.

2. Edit the charts as needed - the profile changes as you edit it.

3. When you switch to a different profile, your existing charts will disappear and be replaced by charts from the other profile. Switching back to the first profile will bring back the charts you were editing previously.

To copy indicators and settings onto another chart, use Templates. Save a template from the source chart, and load it onto the new chart so that indicators and colors and settings get propagated into this chart.

Let me know if that helps!

Hi Igor,

The way profiles work in MT4 is a little different from what most people expect.

Normally when you work in other programs, first you edit a document to your liking, then you save it, then you open it again and edit it as needed.

With MT4, this is all done backwards: FIRST you save, THEN you edit.

When you do Profiles -> Save As, this creates a NEW profile, containing the charts you are looking at RIGHT NOW. You are already using the new profile at this point. If you change something, you are changing the profile you just made. Nothing else needs to be done.

So a step by step process for setting up several different profiles would be:

1. Do Profile -> Save As. Make your first profile.
2. Edit this profile to your liking.
3. Do Profile -> Save As. Make your second profile.
4. Delete or edit the charts so that they match what you want for the second profile.
5. Switch between profile 1 and profile 2, and you'll see what I mean.

Hi Eugene,

Thank's for your info.

If i have my favourites indicators on my chart, how do I make a template of it? is it just a simple steps or some programming is needed? I am not a programmer, so I hope it's easy. Could you guide me on how to make a template?

Hi Andy!

Its very easy to save a template:

1) Edit your chart to your liking.
2) Right-click on it, go into Templates -> Save Template.
3) Give it a name
4) Open a new chart
5) Right-click on it, go into Templates -> Choose the template you just made earlier.

Thats it!

Hi there JL,

To back up your MetaTrader 4, the easiest thing to do would be to just:

1) Copy the whole MT4 folder as your backup;
2) On the new PC, re-install a fresh MT4 into the same place as where it used to be;
3) Paste that folder you backed up right on top of the new one, replacing all files;

Hope that helps!
